What photo-to-photo actually means

There are two different things sold under the same label. The first is image-to-image generation: your photograph is the starting point, and the model edits it. Walls, rooflines, fence panels and the camera angle survive because they are in the source pixels.

The second is text-to-image dressed up as a yard tool. You upload a photo, the tool reads it for a general impression, and then generates a fresh scene. The output can be beautiful and still be a different property.

The tell is the house. Compare the input and the output at the roofline, the window trim and the position of the front door. If those moved, the tool regenerated rather than edited, and the render is worth nothing as a plan.

What it changes and what it leaves alone

How to photograph a yard so the result is usable

Stand where you would stand to show a contractor the space, roughly chest height, and include a fixed reference — the house wall, a fence corner, the driveway apron. A photo of grass with no reference gives the model nothing to hold onto.

Shoot in flat light. Hard midday shadows get baked into the render as if they were planting. Overcast is ideal, early morning is fine.

Get the whole area in one frame rather than a close crop. The generator can only design what it can see, and a tight shot of one bed produces a design for one bed.

Shoot in landscape orientation, not portrait. Yards are wider than they are tall, and a portrait frame throws away the left and right thirds of the space — which is usually where the boundary planting has to go.

Take the same photo twice, once from each end of the space. Two angles cost nothing and they catch the failure mode nobody expects: a design that reads beautifully from the patio door and makes no sense at all from the far fence, because the model only ever saw one side of the site.

Where it still fails

Three things go wrong consistently. The first is scale and time: renders show planting at mature size, so a bed that reads as full and established in the image is three to five seasons away in reality. Budget accordingly.

Slope is the second. A single photograph carries weak depth information, and a sloped yard often comes back rendered flat. If your site drops more than a foot across its width, treat any render as a mood board rather than a layout.

The third is climate. A tool that suggests planting without knowing where you are will happily place species that die in your first winter — check anything you like against the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map before you buy it.

The pattern worth noticing: the products that charge most up front are not the ones that generate best. They are the ones that added AR, which is an expensive feature to build and a rarely used one once the novelty passes.

One thing to check before paying anything: whether the free tier watermarks its output. A watermarked render is useless for the job most people are doing with it, which is showing the result to a partner or a contractor and arguing about it.

Which tools actually work from your photo
