A digging spade with a squared blade, a four-tine digging fork, a steel rake, a wheelbarrow and a decent pair of secateurs get through most residential work. That is the honest list. A border spade with a narrower blade is worth adding if you are planting between established shrubs, because a full-width blade cannot get in without cutting roots you meant to keep.

Two things matter more than brand. The first is the handle: a D-handle spade is easier to lever with, a long T-handle is easier on the back across a full day. The second is blade thickness, which is what fails first on cheap tools — a spade that folds the first time it meets a buried stone is a spade you buy twice.

What a mattock is actually for

A mattock is a two-headed digging tool: an adze blade on one side for breaking ground, and on the other either an axe blade, which makes it a cutter mattock, or a pick point, which makes it a pick mattock. It is not a bigger spade, and it is not for moving soil.

It earns its place in three situations and no others. Roots, where the axe head cuts clean through something a spade only bruises. Compacted or stony ground, where the pick point breaks a crust the spade blade skates off. And lifting a stump or an established shrub, which is levering and chopping rather than digging.

If none of those describe the ground you have, skip it — a mattock is the tool most often bought on the strength of a video and then never picked up. If one of them does describe your ground, nothing substitutes. Buy the pick mattock for stony soil, the cutter mattock for roots.

Hire or buy: the plate compactor question

A plate compactor is the tool most often bought unnecessarily, and it is also not optional. It vibrates a sub-base into a solid layer so paving does not sink. Iowa State University Extension's paver guide specifies compacting the sub-grade and then the gravel base, with at least two passes at right angles to drive out air pockets. Skip that and the patio settles unevenly inside a season.

For one patio, hire it. Rental counters carry them, a weekend covers most residential jobs, and the machine is heavy, needs fuel and needs somewhere to live afterwards.

Buying starts to make sense at roughly the point you lay more than one hardscape project a year. That threshold is also why the rental market exists: about 78% of US landscaping businesses are sole proprietors with no employees, and a one-person outfit rents plant rather than owning it.

String lines and edging irons decide whether it looks laid

The difference between a path that looks laid and one that looks poured is set by three cheap tools. A string line and wooden pegs give the straight edge. A spirit level on a straight length of timber gives the fall. A half-moon edging iron gives a lawn a clean vertical face, which a spade cannot match, because a spade blade is curved and leaves a scalloped line.

Set the line before you dig, never after. Twenty minutes moving a string or a hose around costs nothing and settles a shape that is expensive to change once it is in stone.

Two other kinds of software carry the same label and answer a different question. Plan drawers — Planner 5D and SmartDraw are the names that surface on this query — produce a scaled overhead drawing with dimensions on it. That is what a builder prices from, what an HOA committee reads, and the only way to find out whether a 12-foot patio actually fits.

The second is slope.
